Mission and Ministries

CSFN Mission & Ministry, Inc.

CSFN Mission & Ministry, Inc., began on May 1, 2007, but its roots extend back to the late 19th century, when the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth (CSFN) first came to the United States and began serving families and children in Chicago, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

The sisters founded hospitals, schools and orphanages, institutions which over the years became the sponsored ministries of the CSFNs.  When the CSFNs consolidated what had been five U.S. provinces into Holy Family Province (USA) on May 1, 2007, they organized CSFN Mission and Ministry, Inc., to provide the congregational oversight and ensure the ‘mission effectiveness’ of these institutions.

Sr. Loretta Theresa Felici, MMI president, explains:
“MMI is a vehicle, a means by which the Sisters remain in close relationship and commitment with our ministries, to ensure continuity and deepen the relationships between the CSFNs as a sponsor and the boards of directors and leadership of the ministries.”

The MMI structure “helps us to make concrete our Nazareth mission to aid and support families in all areas of life – particularly in education, social services and health care,” Sr. Loretta Theresa says.

“As stewards, we are called to have significant influence over these ministries in order to fulfill our canonical responsibility to the Church,” Sr. Loretta Theresa says.  “The CSFN community is privileged to serve as sponsor of these institutions, ultimately serving the Church and the creation of the Kingdom of God among us.”

CSFN MMI Institutions

MMI enables the U.S. Province to maintain its stewardship responsibilities for the specific ministry organizations founded by the CSFNs in the U.S.  This includes hospital systems, schools, a university, retreat houses and social service agencies.  Over the years, as these institutions have grown, they have established independent boards of directors, typically with the local Provincial Superior as a key member.  “Each of our sponsored ministries is deeply committed to excellence,” Sr. Loretta Theresa notes.
