Feb. 3: Weekly reflection on vocations

February 3, 2010.

Weekly reflection from Sr. Michele Vincent Fisher, CSFN, National Vocation Director

Dear friends,

Last Sunday I had the joy of attending the baptism of Abigail Marie.  Abigail's mom, Corina, was one of the first members of a youth group I formed 16 years ago when I first began doing parish ministry.  During my fledgling year as a new parish minister, Corina was like my right hand, ever-present, always willing to try something new, interested in growing her relationship with Christ, having a true servant's heart.

Watching her grow and mature into a wonderful young adult was a joy. For several years, she entertained the thought of a vocation to religious life.  It would have been wonderful to count her among our new members. The sisters enjoyed her presence whenever she came to visit and she, too, seemed at home in our presence.

And then came those tricky "in-between" years when life seems to throw the doors of possibility wide open and each of us has to navigate the sometimes turbulent waters to discover our true calling.  Corina found hers when she met Rob, her best friend and future husband. Through it all, there was never a doubt that at the center of it all was her relationship with Christ.

Corina and I have kept a good relationship over these past 16 years. Her parents are now lay associates, members of the Association of the Holy Family.  I attended Corina and Rob's wedding three years ago and now have the joy of meeting and getting to know the "next" generation. Seeing Rob and Corina at the baptismal font with Abigail warmed my heart and reminded me of the importance of the Christian community and the bonds of relationship that bind us together in Christ and with one another.  What a joy to see our various vocations being lived well.

This coming Sunday the Church will celebrate World Day for Consecrated Life. I look forward to being in Texas for the weekend, catching up with our Discernment Group and meeting some new faces at our "Come and See" Day.  As you go to prayer in the coming days, remember the amazing men and women who have given their lives to Christ as religious priests, brothers and sisters. Whisper a prayer of thanks for the gift their lives have brought to the Church and to the world and offer a prayer that more young men and women will hear God's call to "come into the fields...for the harvest is rich and the laborers are few."

Until next week...joyfully in the Holy Family,

Sr. Michele
