About UsOur HistoryThe Congregation has a rich, 133-year tradition of serving God through service to families. Founded in Rome in 1875 by Blessed Frances Siedliska, the Congregation came to the States in 1885. In fact, the foundress and 11 sisters landed in New York on July 4, 1885; they proceeded by train to Chicago, arriving on July 6 to start their ministry to Polish immigrants. From those early days, the sisters have ministered to families through education, health care and family services. In recent decades, those ministries have expanded to include spirituality/retreat ministry, parish ministry, prison ministry, youth ministry and work with the poor in non-traditional settings. Internationally, the Congregation has sisters serving in Italy, Poland, England, France, Israel, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Australia, the Philippines, and most recently, in Kazakhstan. Our History “When I think of this miracle of God's mercy to have chosen our small Nazareth, the last in God's Church, for such work and that He entrusted to us such an important task in his Kingdom... I cannot tell you how grateful I am to the Lord of Love." (Blessed Mary of Jesus the Good Shepherd, writing about the first Nazareth establishments in the United States)
Frances Siedliska, a noblewoman from Poland, founded the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth (CSFN) as an international congregation. She chose Rome rather than another European city to emphasize the CSFNs' international nature. Her feast day is Nov. 21.
